March in the Studio: Zines, Markets, and Chaos, Oh My

Phew. What a year that was. Wait? What? It’s only mid-March? Are you sure? 😬

Seriously, though, it’s been a hectic one. I started this studio update a week ago and am just getting to finish it. So, I thought I'd share a bit of what's been going on around here. The good, the bad, and the broken, if you will.

Along with the usual busyness of spring ramping up (garden planning, seed starting, kids' birthdays, updating my portfolio for another round of pitching) we had a few unexpected life things pop up (an increasingly bad washer leak, the fridge going kaput, kids getting sick right before their birthdays).

So, as any sane person with too much on their plate does, I thought, “I should make a zine!” which, of course, led to “I should teach other people to make zines!” and now I’m working on my second zine while planning a local zine making workshop. Oh, and I went semi-viral. More on that below.

It’s also the start of market booth season, so I’m working on making sure I have items to sell at the markets I’ll be setting up at this spring and summer.

If you're local, mark your calendar for April 12th and come find me at the Spring Fling at Jackson Square! There will be music, food trucks, and a slew of talented local folks. I’m hoping to have limited runs of my zines, stickers, note cards, and a few other things.

That is, once I figure out what’s wrong with my printer. 😩 This year, y’all.

Anyway, here's what else I've been up to this month:

  • I released Episode 04 of the Anti-Hustle Podcast, sharing 10 of my favorite ideas for marketing your micro-business
  • That zine I mentioned earlier went micro-viral on Substack and is close to hitting 1000 likes as I write this 😮 I put up a printable version that's now being printed and distributed locally by a couple of handfuls of folks around the country, which is absolutely wild to me.
  • I'm finishing up a fun Fantasy Map pattern that I plan to pitch later this month. It's part of a collection that will also include dragons, so watch for those soon, too.
