Ep. 02: Content vs Relationship Marketing [Listen Now] 🎧

A recent trap I've fallen into is leaning hard on the content side of marketing my business. And by 'leaning hard' I mean relying mainly on social media posts and the occasional newsletter to magically bring in new projects.

It's something I've noticed in other micro businesses I work with, too, this passive reliance on what we know as content marketing. Creating a continuous stream of blogs, podcasts, social media, and lead magnets and hoping they somehow result in more money in the bank and the ability to keep doing the thing we enjoy.

It's just become the way to peddle our wares as our businesses have become (or began) so hyper online.

And that's not all bad. Content marketing has become synonymous with marketing because--if done well--it can be very effective.

It's not the only way, though. It's relatively new, compared to the long history of people selling things to other people. And I would argue that it might not be the most effective way for most small businesses to market themselves.

When I first started figuring out this world of self-employment, before marketing on social media was even a thing, I had to find other ways to get the word out about my business. I tried everything from placing newspaper ads to walking into local businesses with a packet of client work and an in-person introduction. I read books like Guerilla Marketing.

Some things worked, some didn't. and what I learned in that time of trial and error felt banal, but I'm now so thankful for the skills and mindset I picked up.

This week on the podcast, I'm talking about different styles of marketing, from making content to building relationships and a lot of gray areas in between. If you're looking for a new way of thinking about your marketing or just want a few good ideas, come have a listen.

Also, if you enjoy the first episode and want to help me get the word out, I've made a few shareable graphics you can post, pin, or send. Find those here, along with my eternal gratitude. 😍

Until next time!
